Endometrium is the lining of the inside of the womb (Uterus).
Uterine polyps are usually non-cancerous but very few can be cancerous or precancerous.
Endometrial polyps are common in women between 20 to 40 years of age.
CAUSES
Definite cause of endometrial polyps is not known why polyps develop but there are several factors may influence their formation.
Estrogen which plays a role in causing the endometrium thick every month. Polyps grow when estrogen level more or high in the body.
OTHERS CAUSES
- Family history : polyps may be hereditary
- Obesity
- Tamoxifen, a treatment for breast cancer
- Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy
- Hypertension
SYMPTOMS
- Irregular menstrual bleeding
- Bleeding between menstrual periods
- Vaginal bleeding after menopause
- Infertility
- Menstrual like cramps or pain
Diagnosis
INVESTIGATION
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- Hysteroscopy
- Endometrial biopsy
- Hysterosonogram
- Three-dimensional ultrasound
- Hystosalpingography
Treatment
- If you have any symptom of uterine polyps immediately consult with gynecologist
- Medication : hormonal medicine, including progestins and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist.
- Surgical : Polypectomy
