Abscess form within the retro pharyngeal space of gillete. Collection of pus located on the lateral aspect of tonsils at the posterior pharyngeal wall (behind the throat).
It can be life threatening infectious condition. Common in infant, small child. It is result as a complication of primary infection elsewhere in the head, nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, adenoids
CAUSES
1. Bacterial Infection are Streptococcus, Staphylococcus
2. Abscess occurs after trauma to the area
3. RTI

1.Tuberculosis
2. HIV
SYMPTOMS
1. Sudden complaint of high rise of temperature
2. Difficult to breathing
3. The child refuses of food, difficult to swallowing
4. Dribling of saliva
5. Offensive breathing
6.severe sore throat
7. The head is tilted towards the affected side of lesion and becomes immobile known as TORTICULLIS
8. STRIDOR present
OTHER SYMPTOMS
1. Offensive breath
2. A height pitched, whistling sound present while taking in a breath
INVESTIGATION
1. X-ray of neck
2. CT scan of neck
3. Throat culture
4. CBC (complete blood count)
1. Surgical drainage of abscess
2. IV antibiotics
3. Medicines for pain and fever
