Overall
Abscess form within the Peritonsilar space. Localized collection of puss between the tonsilar capsule and superior constrictor muscles of the pharynx. It a complication of tonsillitis.
Peritonsillar absecss common in adult male children, adolescent.
CAUSES
- Recurrent acute tonsillitis
- Strep throat (Group A beta haemolytic streptococcus)
- Mononucleosis
OTHERS CAUSES
Dental sepsis
SYMPTOMS
- Sore throat
- High raised of temperature
- Dysphagia
- Difficult to open the mouth, whole tonsils covered with pus
- Pain radiated throat to ear
- Dribling of saliva
- Lymph glands in the neck enlarge and tender
Oedematous uvula
Offensive breadth
OTHER SYMPTOMS
- Ear pain
- Speach thick cannot understood easily
Diagnosis
INVESTIGATION
- On clinical examination- marked congestion of tonsils with redness and tonsils full covered with a layer of pus. Oedomatous uvula present.
- Throat culture – the test can be determine of streptococcus
- Blood test – the test can be determine of mononucleosis
- CT, MRI, USG
- Pus culture
Treatment
- Conservative treatment in case of tonsillitis with antibiotics, anti viral medication, regular gurgle
- In chronic cases (consult with ENT surgeons) Tonsillectomy advice
- In case of Diphtheria immediate consult with treating doctor.
