It is the collection of the air in the plueral cavity.

Artificial Pneumothorax – Previously done to treat pulmonary tuberculosis.
Traumatic Pneumothorax –
•Chest trauma
•Ribs trauma
•Pleural biopsy
•During pleural fluid drainage
•Spontaneous Pneumothorax – A spontaneous pneumothorax is the sudden onset of a collapsed lung without any apparent cause or pneumothorax not due to trauma.
•Rupture of apical subpleural bleb
•Rupture of superficial subpleural emphysematous bullae
•Rupture of subpleural tubercular focus
•Rupture of subpleural tubercular cavity
•Staphylococcal lung abscess
•Bronchogenic carcinoma
•Whooping cough
Catamenial pneumothorax – pneumothorax during menstruation ( due to endometriosis)
SYMPTOMS:
• Sharp pain in the chest due to scratching of pleura, aggravate by coughing
• Haemoptysis
• Fever
• Shortness of breath
• Weakness
• Lethergy
• malaise
• Anaemia present
• Clubbing present in CA lung abscess
COMPLICATIONS
• Haemo pneumothorax
• Pyo pneumothorax
• Pneumo mediastinum
• Collapse
INVESTIGATION
• X-RAY – Hyper translucent, collapse lung margin, Trachea shifted opposite side
• Blood pf R/E
• Sputum
• HRCT of lung
