Overall
It is an inflammation of the pharynx. Pharynx is a muscular tube. It is a common passage for food and air, it decided into larynx and oesophagus.
Commonest type of sore throat as a result of pharyngeal inflammation.
TYPE
- Acute pharyngitis
- Acute nasopharyngeal pharyngitis
- Acute septic pharyngitis
CAUSES
- Viral Or bacterial infection
- Common cold and flu
- It can occurs with _typhoid ,measels, influenxa, chickenpox, mononucleosis( viral type)_
- After using certain drugs which containing potassium, mercury, arsenic
- Whooping cough
- Group A streptococcus ( strep thorat)
- Allergic rhinitis
OTHERS CAUSES
Rarely occurs from dental sepsis
SYMPTOMS
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Malasia
- Difficult to swallowing or _Dysphagia_ both solid and liquid food
- Cough and hoarsness of voice
- Pain when speaking
- Oedematous uvula
- Offensive breathing
OTHER SYMPTOMS
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
Diagnosis
INVESTIGATION
- Physical examination- doctor look at your throat
- Throat culture – the test detect to positive of _streptococcus_ or not
- Blood test – The test can be determine of _mononucleosis( viral infection)
Treatment
- Only medical treatment with alkaline gurgle cures the cases
- Bacterial pharyngitis is treated with antibiotics
- Fungal pharyngitis is treated with antifungal medication
